α-Iodoacetamide is a compound used as an electrophile for covalent modification of nucleophilic residues on proteins (cysteine, methionine, histidine). When modifying the active-site residues of cysteine proteases, α-Iodoacetamide acts as an irreversible inhibitor of these enzymes.
Uses: It can be used as a protease inhibitor CH2ICONH2. Like iodoacetic acid, it can irreversibly inhibit SH enzymes through the following reactions. R-SH+ICH2CONH2→R-S-CH2CONH2+HI
Uses: Alkylation reagents for histidine and cysteine in proteomics, for peptide sequencing and enzyme inhibitors. Also used in organic synthesis.
